Thyroid Surgery
Thyroid Surgery is a procedure that would be considered when an abnormal enlargement of the thyroid gland or nodule is present and/or medical management has failed to resolve the issue. The thyroid is a gland that is found at the front of the neck and is responsible for regulation of hormones and many functions of the body. This gland can develop nodules and cysts which are generally not concerning however if a growth is suspicious a biopsy of this area may be suggested.

The thyroid can also be underactive (hypothyroidism) or overactive (hyperthyroidism). These medical conditions are often treated with specific medication to stabilize and restore the function of the thyroid however if the medications are ineffective, having the thyroid removed (called a thyroidectomy) may also be considered.
When seeing an ENT, your neck and thyroid area will be examined and palpated for any abnormalities. Prior blood work or imaging including ultrasound of the thyroid may be reviewed to determine the plan of care. If surgical indications are recommended, discussion regarding a thyroidectomy will then be discussed at that time.
